The wine region just north of Christchurch that still feels like a local secret.

North Canterbury has quietly earned a place among New Zealand's top wine regions, but what keeps people coming back isn't just what's in the glass, it's the warm welcome waiting on the other side of the cellar door.

Ask anyone who's spent a lazy afternoon exploring North Canterbury wine country and they'll probably tell you the same thing – it's not somewhere you rush.

Just a short drive north of Christchurch, the scenery begins to open up. Vineyards stretch across rolling countryside with mountain backdrops in the distance, and the pace feels a little different. Cellar doors are unhurried, conversations last a little longer, and there's every chance the person pouring your tasting has had a hand in making the wine too.

"North Canterbury has always been about people as much as wine. We love welcoming visitors into our cellar doors, sharing our stories and showing them why this little corner of Canterbury has become such a special place to grow grapes," says Katie Lumber, Waipara Springs and Deputy Chair North Canterbury Wine Growers Inc.

It's that personal touch that gives North Canterbury its charm.

For a region that's smaller than many of New Zealand's better-known wine destinations, North Canterbury has built an impressive reputation. Four local wineries, Bell Hill, Black Estate, Pegasus Bay and Pyramid Valley, were named among The Real Review's Top 30 New Zealand wineries, recognition that speaks to the quality being produced here.

Yet despite those accolades, the region has held onto the down-to-earth hospitality that makes visitors feel welcome, whether they're seasoned wine lovers or simply looking for a memorable day out. "People are often surprised by what they find here. They come for a tasting and leave having discovered somewhere they'll recommend to friends and family. That's something we're incredibly proud of," says Brittney Duval, Admin and Marketing North Canterbury Wine Growers Inc.

The wines are a big part of the story too, of course. North Canterbury is known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and aromatic white wines, but the experience extends well beyond the tasting room. It's about taking your time, soaking up the landscape and discovering the personalities behind the labels.

That welcoming spirit carries through to the region's two signature events. The North Canterbury Wine & Food Festival brings people together beneath the iconic oak trees to enjoy local wines, regional food and live entertainment in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Meanwhile, the North Canterbury Wine Collective takes the region into the city, connecting more people with the growers, winemakers and producers who make this part of Canterbury so special.

Whether you're planning a weekend outing with friends, showing visitors a different side of Canterbury or simply looking for somewhere new to explore, North Canterbury offers a wine experience that feels refreshingly genuine. There are no crowds to navigate and no expectation that you know your Pinot from your Riesling before you arrive, it's just passionate people who love sharing what they do.

"Whether you're a wine enthusiast or simply looking for somewhere different to spend an afternoon, North Canterbury is a place where everyone is welcome. We hope people leave feeling like they've experienced something genuinely local," says Matt Barbour, Fern Bank Wines Chairman North Canterbury Wine Growers Inc.

So if it's been a while since you've headed north, or you've never ventured beyond Christchurch's city limits, this could be the perfect excuse.
